Watching the Sunset Can Make You Happier

Most of us only make time for sunsets when we’re on vacation, as if that calming, beautiful moment can only occur when we’re in an exotic place, free from everyday obligations.

But  the sun sets every single day, no matter where you are. And with the days getting longer and the weather getting warmer, the sunset is becoming more and more accessible, and an easy, free way to infuse some wonder and awe into your regular routine.

Studies show that appreciating natural beauty may boost well-being, increase generosity and enhance life satisfaction. The key is to actively engage with the experience. To reap the rewards of that sunset, you need to stop whatever else you’re doing and really notice and appreciate the show in the sky. The sun is the force of all life, and staring at it can infuse the body with large amounts of energy. Our ancestors understood the relation between the sun and health. From the Aztecs to the ancient Egyptians, many past societies revered sungazing as an esoteric practice for high-ranking priests and shamans. The practice of sun gazing has some truly amazing benefits, not only for your physical health, but also for your mental well-being and spiritual development. If you haven’t heard of sun gazing before, it means to stare at the sun for a short period of time, during what are known as safe hours during the day, either during the first hour of the sunrise, or the last hour before the sun sets. This should be ideally practiced barefoot with your feet standing on the earth.

Make it a meditation. Take several slow, deep breaths to relax your body and calm your mind. Then intentionally focus on the sunset, noticing how the colors and light change as the sunset first builds in intensity and then fades. As you are staring at the sun visualize the energy from the sun coming into your body and filling your body and cells with rejuvenating light. After ungazing go for a barefoot walk…

During this time it is important to stay centered and see what comes up for you. It is also a good idea to keep a journal to track your progress and keeping note of how you are physically and mentally feeling.
